Casas do Pátio | Casas de Alpedide

Coimbra City Center

About us

The Casas do Patio, in an unexpected courtyard located on Fernandes Thomas Street, and Casas de Alpedide, at Joaquim António de Aguiar Street, one of the oldest streets of Coimbra, are in the heart of the historic center of Coimbra inside the ancient walls of Coimbra, just a few meters from one of the gates of the medieval city, the Arco de Almedina, the picturesque Quebra-Costas, and the monumental Sé Velha. Casas do Patio and Casas de Alpedide have a privileged location, a five-minute walk from the architectural complex of the World Heritage Site since 2013, the Mondego River, as well as the downtown and uptown areas of Coimbra. Visitors can explore and discover on foot both the downtown area (traditional commerce, restaurants, and Fado houses) and the uptown area (where the famous University is located, the first in Portugal and the second oldest in Europe). Staying at here puts you in the center of Coimbra's history and traditions. Casas do Patio and Casas de Alpedide are in the same building, with many centuries. The apartments result from the restoration, in 2022 and 2024, of the building in that once housed the Correio-mor, the first postal service in Portugal, created in 1520 by King D. Manuel I. The facade of the building was preserved, while the interior was completely renovated, creating various modern and fully equipped spaces for 2 to 6 people, with access to a private courtyard.
