About us

The Casas do Patio are in the heart of the historic center of Coimbra, in an unexpected courtyard located on Fernandes Thomas Street, inside the ancient walls of Coimbra, just a few meters from one of the gates of the medieval city, the Arco de Almedina, the picturesque Quebra-Costas, and the monumental Sé Velha. Casas do Patio have a privileged location, a five-minute walk from the architectural complex of the World Heritage Site since 2013, the Mondego River, as well as the downtown and uptown areas of Coimbra. Visitors can explore and discover on foot both the downtown area (traditional commerce, restaurants, and Fado houses) and the uptown area (where the famous University is located, the first in Portugal and the second oldest in Europe). Staying at Casas do Patio puts you in the center of Coimbra's history and traditions. The apartments of Casas do Patio result from the restoration in 2022 of the building that once housed the Correio-mor, the first postal service in Portugal, created in 1520 by King D. Manuel I. The facade of the building was preserved, while the interior was completely renovated, creating various modern and fully equipped spaces for 2 to 5 people, each with access to a private courtyard. Each House is named after the building's ancient use: Casa do Correio (Mail House), Casa do Selo (Stamp House), Casa da Carta (Letter House), Casa do Carteiro (Mailman's House), Casa do Postal (Postcard House), Casa da Encomenda (Parcel House), and Casa da Mala-posta (Mail Bag House).
